Lyric Opera of Kansas City – The Flying Dutchman

We were absolutely delighted to bring to life the infamously eerie phantom ship in Wagner’s The Flying Dutchman for the Lyric Opera’s 2012 production. In collaboration with Venice Communications, we worked closely and creatively with the Lyric’s design team, building a three-dimensional animated ship that would be replicated onstage with wood and nails. To get the right look, our creative director extensively researched shipbuilding techniques of the time and found inspiration in the real-life sets of silent films, like Nosferatu.

Beginning completely from scratch, we envisioned the waves, the skies, the wind and the sails with pencil and paper, then with 3D modeling. Each performance opened with our ship’s stormy journey, projected onto a giant scrim in Kansas City’s breathtaking Kauffman Center for the Performing Arts.
